In Ioannina, in northwest Greece, lives a small community of Jews virtually unknown in other parts of the world. They are Romaniotes (Greek speaking Jews), descendants of Byzantine Jews who have been living in Ioannina since the 8th century. From medieval times until the Holocaust, the Jewish community of Ioannina was one of the leading Jewish centers in the Levant.
